The Drug War is Going Down in Flames.
So how can drugs be such a terrible thing to justify all this?
I’m not going to insult you, you know what I’m talking about.
They have failed to illustrate this to me. The more I read in message boards online I see that the world is waking up to its condition. The Bush catastrophe of the last 8 years has catapulted public opinion drastically in the other direction on many of these frivolous “moral” expenditures.
The Mexican Senate has passed a bill expected to be signed into law by Mexican President Calderon, decriminalizing possession of 5 grams of marijuana, and .018g for cocaine. These laws drastically conflict with Bush drug war tactics. Former Mexican President Vincente Fox previously vetoed a similar bill under pressure from Bush Administration and Cabinet member Drug Czar John Walters. Walters campaign to stop the flow of marijuana into the United States proved a failure, allowing just enough foreign product in to fuel cartels point blank, and failing to fully assess the massive domestic demand for cannabis. Bush-Walters policies did not affect usage of marijuana at all, with over 50% of the US supporting the legalization of marijuana.*
In the morning dew of the Obama Administration, Mexican Officials now must succeed in passing this into law.
Obama has yet to speak on this topic specifically. TheUnited States is seeing an increasingly democratic congress, with recent cross-over former republican, Senator Arlen Spektor.
A commentator of the drug war writes:
“(Another brick) in the wall is crumbling.
If Calderon is so much on the political spot that he has to decriminalize possession to retain public support he is in trouble. And let’s not forget that the legislature still needs to move his proposal. I would bet it gets modified along the way. (If Mexican legislative process allows for that.)
The elections in Mexico this summer should be a real cliffhanger for those who support the drug war.
